VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)

Also known as IP telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony and broadband phone, VoIP refers to communication transported via the Internet.  Traditional voice transfer is referred to as PSTN, which stands for public switched telephone network.  You may also hear the term POTS, which means Plain Old Telephone System.

The process for VoIP is the conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression/translation of the signal into Internet protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the Internet – the process is reversed to be received.
